Cultivating Presence

By Nicola Walker

Do you ever get a feeling of so much energy in your head that you can't focus on whatever you're trying to do? I had this experience the other day when I was working on the computer. I had shifted from working through my actions for the day in a relaxed and focused way to feverishly trying to work something out. On a subtle level I knew I was wasting my time because I was no longer being effective. Finally I pulled myself away and walked outside into the sunshine.

Whenever you get a sense of pushing from the head you can know that you are not being fully present to the peace and wisdom of your true nature. Sadly, in our culture we often trust the analytical mind over our intuitive wisdom. It is often a big leap for people to trust and follow their intuitive wisdom as a way of life. Even if you consider yourself spiritually aware and conscious, you can still get trapped into old ways of being and perceiving.

Try to create a habit of monitoring when there is an excess of energy in your head. Some of the reasons for a build-up of head energy can be that you are pushing, rushing, feeling insecure or fearful, trying to control events or judging yourself or another person. Any or all of the following steps will help you to center yourself and return your attention from the past or the future. Peace and wisdom comes to you when you are fully in the present moment.

  1. Stop and breathe
  2. Stand and really feel your feet on the ground
  3. Appreciate something that you see in front of you right now and spend time looking at it, really taking it in
  4. Walk and breathe fully allowing deep appreciation to fill your heart
  5. Activate all your senses in noticing what's around you (going outside really helps refresh you in this way)
  6. Allow yourself to let go of everything that you are holding onto right now and be fully present with just being

Often many of our daily tasks are focused on preparing for some future event, which takes us away from being present in our bodies right now. Once the task is over, your energy can still be locked in the future so coming back to now is a good habit to cultivate throughout the day. Coming back to the now moment is also extremely beneficial for our health, relationships and overall prosperity.
