Finding Grace in the Chaos of Change

By Nicola Walker

Every now and then life will shake you up as plans fall apart, expectations are dashed and you find yourself plummeting back to the void, the vast unknown. Change is part of the ebb and flow of life. And yet, when it happens we get to see how attached we are to what appears to be solid in our world.

I have fallen into the void many times while creating my path of work in the world. I’ve walked into the fire of my resistance to what is, of wanting to push and control, of work plans falling apart and intentions losing their power as change breeds confusion. I’ve come to recognize these times as a meltdown of my concept that it is really me doing my life and creating my success. As I come to rest in the presence of my own being, I am keenly aware of an infinitely loving wisdom blessing me and taking care of everything. This Infinite Wisdom is the Supreme Intelligence operating in my life—the only one that is truly in charge.

For many, it is hard to trust this sense of infinite loving wisdom, in the face of the nuts and bolts world of business, bills and the practicalities of life. For years I felt split between the spiritual and the practical. And yet, it is all one. It simply requires a leap of faith to trust that there is only one wisdom operating in our lives. Often we cling to "me and what I want", as we anxiously face the great unknown of what Source might want for us. With such a belief system, we live life pushing against an imagined oppositional force, shouldering the burden of trying to work out how to get our needs met in a hard and complicated world.

All we need to do is to take a deep breath and trust that the same wisdom that supports health and life in our physical bodies, will also support right action in our daily lives. When we open to the presence of Being, we actually do get up and move, make choices and decisions, and create results in the world. We might not get the job or client we wanted, but in retrospect we see the wisdom in the unfolding of the events in our lives. Life is in fact benevolent.

The less we get caught up in our sense of “me”, the more life can flow freely through us as one wisdom. As you grow to recognize that it is really Source moving you through your life, you become more adept at getting out of the way, putting an end to separate, conflicting agendas.

When you are present to what is happening right now, you have all the information you need to proceed. The key lies in how you interpret or respond to the present moment. You can go off on a tangent and suffer. Or, you can find the path of freedom, flow and positive results.

The more you surrender to the ocean of consciousness, the less life rocks your boat. Paradoxically, the more you think of yourself as the captain of your boat, responsible for navigating the vast and unpredictable ocean, the greater the likelihood that your “boat” will hit the rocks and capsize.

The more you feel your true Being, the more you feel grace operating in your life. All is well, even if it doesn’t look like what you expected or even want. You yield to what is, because ultimately that’s where there’s peace. You can only fly again once you’ve come to rest in your own Being. In the stillness, the expansive space of awakened awareness, you get to hear the small voice within, you get to receive a fresh perspective, you feel guidance and maybe even the rush of Divine inspiration.

In profound gratitude for life itself, you become grace. Free from attachment to your intentions and future plans designed to save you or improve your life, you come to rest in the fullness of the present moment. You realize there is nothing to desire for you have everything you desire. When your sense of me loses its grip on life, life flows freely and grace is palpable in the simple events of each day. To the awakened heart, everything is possible.
