Dare to Dream and Have the Courage to Act

By Nicola Walker

Life is constant change and we should be used to this irreversible fact by now, but it can certainly feel like a shock when a new change suddenly stares you in the face without any warning. This was what happened to me, this summer. I’d just taken a big leap in leaving a five year relationship that didn’t feel authentically me any more and I’d moved into a house-share in San Rafael, Marin. The day I went to visit my prospective new home I was thrilled with everything I saw. I liked the people, the house, the location. And yet gradually as the months went by some things that I’d never noticed at the start began to seriously bug me. I tried accepting and non-judgment and blessing and being. Still, something was up.

My mind was struck by the perceived horror and immensity of having to pack and move and look for a place all over again. Communication, however mindful, had no positive effects because my housemates were programmed to operate in a certain way. They couldn't reprogram themselves. Why should they? That was the way they were wired.

I went for long walks in the hills and began to dream. I started to connect with what I would love to experience. I would love to live in a beautiful, spacious, luxurious home. I would love lots of different places to sit, both outside and in. I would love to live with conscious, loving people. And, most importantly, I would love to feel incredibly nurtured by my home. I started feeling how it would feel to sit and feel so blessed by the gift of this beautiful home. My whole body moved into a state of ecstasy and light. A small voice within said, “If you can imagine and feel this so profoundly, it is yours. Give thanks, and let it come to you.”

And so I did. I took whatever actions felt right and one evening a woman called and said, “I have that kind of home. Come and see it.”

I now live there. In a home that fills me with bliss. All the details, that I never even articulated but were present somewhere in my dream, have all been attended to, as if by magic. My housemates and I are all thrilled to be together and the house, garden and magnificent views all hold me in such a way that I feel as blissful and loved as the day I was born.

As with all experiences, there are seeds of wisdom within this tale that can be applied to many other areas of life:

1. When you get hit by a realization that something isn’t working, or some news that throws you for a loop, stop and breathe through the emotions and physical sensations. Like it or not, this is really happening.

2. Go for a walk, or do some activity that allows your mind to become quiet so your wisdom can speak to you.

3. Connect with what you would most love. See it, sense it, hear it and let it be yours.

4. Follow action steps that feel good.
